Leather & Fabric Panel Replacement in Telford & Shropshire

We replace damaged leather and fabric panels on removable cushions, chair pads and sofa covers across Telford, Shrewsbury and Shropshire.

Panel replacement is something we’re often asked about, usually when a cushion has worn through, a panel has torn, or a pet has damaged part of a sofa or chair. In many of these cases, the rest of the furniture is still perfectly good, and replacing a damaged panel can be a very good way of saving the furniture without replacing the whole piece.

Panel replacement involves removing the damaged section and replacing it with new leather or fabric, while keeping the rest of the original cover. When done properly, this can give a worn or damaged piece of furniture a new lease of life and allow you to keep a piece of furniture, giving you a one off piece of furniture, like no other.

We often see furniture where only one area has worn out — usually seat cushions, front borders, or arms — while the rest of the furniture is still structurally sound. In these situations, panel replacement can often be a sensible and cost-effective option compared to full reupholstery or replacing the furniture entirely.

Common Reasons for Panel Replacement

• Worn or cracked leather seat cushions
• Torn fabric cushion panels
• Pet damage to cushions
• Sagging or stretched cushion tops
• Worn front borders on cushions
• Damage to removable chair pads

In some cases, leather can become so worn, cracked or damaged that a repair isn’t possible. When this happens, panel replacement can sometimes be the best option. I can carefully unpick damaged panels and replace them with new leather. This allows us to keep the original sofa or chair, while replacing only the sections that are beyond saving.

Colour Matching

If required, the new leather can then be colour matched and refinished so the new panel blends in with the original colour of your furniture. This helps the new panel match as closely as possible so it doesn’t stand out from the rest of the piece.

Every Piece of Furniture Is Different

Every sofa and chair is made differently. Some covers can be removed and worked on, while some others are fixed which make it very difficult to remove. Because of this, panel replacement isn’t always are option I can offer, which is why I always recommend getting in touch so I can advise whether your furniture is suitable.

Prices for panel replacement are provided on inspection (POA), as every job is different.

As well as leather, I can also replace damaged panels on fabric cushions and removable covers. The process is very similar — the damaged section is removed and a new panel is cut and sewn into the existing cover. This is often suitable for removable seat cushions, back cushions and dining chair pads where the fabric has worn, torn or been damaged and can be removed.

What We Can and Can’t Take On

At the moment, most of the work I take on involves removable cushions, loose covers and smaller items that can be taken back to the workshop and worked on properly. This allows me to take my time and make sure the work is done carefully and properly, rather than trying to rush a repair in someone’s home. Full sofa re-upholstery or large fixed pieces aren’t something I currently take on, as they require a larger workshop setup and more space. I think it’s always better to be honest about what I can and can’t do. If we can help, we will — and if we can’t, we’ll always try to point you in the right direction.

I was once a cleaner, which I loved, because I enjoy getting stuck in and making a real difference to something. But after starting Shropshire Leather Care, I realised something was missing for me. I found that I loved doing panel replacements and sewing work on leather& fabric furniture, so I decided to push myself a bit further and booked onto an upholstery training course, taking my own chair with me to work on. During the course I stripped the chair right back to the frame and rebuilt it from scratch. My confidence grew throughout the training, and by the time I finished, I felt really proud of what I had achieved myself.

JL Upholstery is something I’m now starting to build, beginning with panel replacements and smaller upholstery work, and gradually working towards taking on more upholstery projects in the future.
